A few of my favorite things!

Diaper Hose: makes cleaning the poop off of B.G's nappies so much easier! No more dunking/flushing/dunking...now it's just spraying! Thanks mom and dad for getting that for us!
Organic Mum-Mum's: Calais favorite snack, besides bananas...but gotta limit those because it can back her up a bit! Love hearing her little teeth crunching away
Pumpkin Scones: Yumminess :) Love the ones from Whole Foods...might need to make another trip there!
Books: Anything and everything right now. Thankful that I have the time off right now to enjoy reading. After winter break its back to work and short times with Baby Girl!!!!

Pumpkin Patch 2010

Every time I pick Calais up I can't believe how big she has gotten.
6 months have gone by.
She now weighs 15 pounds!
She loves to smile/laugh/stick out her tongue.
She can sit up on her own.
She has started solids.
Loved peaches and sweet potatoes, didn't really like avocados!Friday, October 8 was a Oregon In-service Day. Most districts will pay for their teachers to go to professional developments. PPS doesn't have enough money, so instead we get a day off! I'll take it.
Joe wasn't working either so we decided to hit up the local pumpkin farm on Sauvie Island. Love that it only takes about 10 minutes to get there from our house. I'm sure we will go at least 1 more time before the fall is over! While out there, we took a hayride. Picked out a few pumpkins. Joe and Calais went on the cow train! Calais loved the wind whipping through her hair (however Joe was a little cramped in his cow Georgia!)

Calais only stays up about 2 hours in between her naps, so when we go we always try to leave right after she wakes up! We didn't get a chance to go to the animal barn or walk around a bit more.

Neglect

Hello Blog, this is Cara! Nice to meet you.
Okay in all serious, I know I've neglected my blog over the past week. I will try and catch up over the weekend.

I have to admit it has been a hard beginning to the school year. Lots of new stuff going on with work (ended up with a much higher level of students than in the past) So many changes and all in all just a stressful place to work.

Working out EVERY morning b/c Joe has been working nights so can't go to the gym them. I've been really good this week. Getting up at 5 every morning to pump then go to the gym.
Really Really Really missing Calais during the day. It's been hard going to work and not getting to hang out with baby girl during the day. I want to tear up each time I think about how much I miss her during the day. Thankfully Joe and I have been able to video chat most days (except for the past few when I've had working lunches) and I can see Calais on the video. I think she can actually recognize me when I talk to her on the computer, which is nice!

I really look forward to the weekends where we can be an actual family and have us all hang out at the same time.

Here's a pic from our trip to the pool last night!

Day 6

Day 06 → Something you hope you never have to do.

Being a new mom I hope that I never have to bury my child. I can't imagine anything worse. When you bring a child into this world you want to give them everything they could possibly ever want.

With an infant, I feel like new moms are constantly warned about SIDS. One of my biggest fears is that something like that could actually happen. Calais has slept in her Pack N Play in our bedroom for her first five months. We have just started putting her in her crib in her room at night. I get up at least 1 x an hour just to check on her and make sure she is okay. On a few occasions, when we put her down for her nap, she will propel herself onto her tummy and then just scream b/c she doesn't like it. I worry that one time she won't scream and we won't know to flip her back. Losing a child is a scary thing and it's in the back of my mind all the time. I hope it's something we don't ever have to deal with.

Day 5

Day 05 → Something you hope to do in your life.

This is an easy one. I hope to actually make a difference in ALL aspects of my life...work, home and friends.

At work, I'd like to think that I continue to make differences in the kids lives that I teach or come in contact with. The school I work at is a residential mental health facility. Think of the worst SPED kids you could imagine, now times it by 100 and that's what I get every day. I'd like to think that I give them a little bit of hope, or that I believe in them and they have a safe place to be when they are in my classroom.

At home, I'd like to make a difference in they way we live. Try to live greener, grow our own food, make our own food, live a healthier lifestyle. I think we are well on our way, but of course there are so many more things that we could do!

With friends, I'd like to think that they are different because they know me. Whether it's because I've made them smile today or made them think of things differently for just a little bit!

Day 4

Day 04 → Something you have to forgive someone for.

This is one I've also thought a lot about. I don't want to just write something that says yes I've forgiven everyone that has made fun of me! Is there anything anyone has done to me that I'm still holding a grudge against or I still get upset when I think about it. I'd have to say no, not necessarily. There are a few instances where I feel sad at the way something turned out and I wish both parties could take back what was said or done, or not done.

So the thing that I want to forgive someone for is friends in college that I no longer keep in touch with. And this is a complete two way street. It's not that they did something wrong, it's that we both did something wrong. I miss some of the friendships that could of lasted over all these years. I hope that in the future we are all able to move on and continue to have our friendships renewed and created stronger! (even if we no longer live close!)

Day 3

Day 3: Something you have to forgive yourself for.

Why is it so much easier to forgive others than to forgive ourselves?

I'd like to forgive myself for not always participating in the here and now. I have a hard time just sitting and focusing on the moment. I'm always worried about what is next and thinking about what I need to do in my head. I'd like to say to myself that it's okay. Realize that I'm like that and attempt to make the change. Focus on those moments that Joe and I are just sitting on the couch holding baby girl. Try to not worry about my classroom or finances or what's for dinner. I don't want twenty years to go by and I realize I've never just been in the moment with my family.

Thursday, September 2, 2010

Day 2

Day 02 → Something you love about yourself.

I love the fact that I'm a mom. I love waking up and see her smile first thing in the morning. I love the way she lights up when she sees me. I love how she likes to grab CB. I love that I no longer get sleep and I feel tired all the time.

Being a mom has turned out to be NOTHING and EVERYTHING that I thought it would be like. It's definitely so much more and I couldn't imagine life without her. I'm so glad this chapter of my life has started and can't wait for all the ups and downs that come with it!

Day 1

Day 01 → Something you hate about yourself.

I find it odd that this is the first truth we are supposed to talk about. It makes me wonder why so many young girls grow up hating too many things about themselves. Probably from a very early age we are taught by what is in media "is" the acceptable norms. Open any magazine and you will know what I'm talking about...skinny, tan, blonde etc. It's hard...I crave for the day where I completely accept who I am. Especially now, how can I teach my daughter to love who she is, if it's a struggle for me!

I also like that this is the first truth in the 30 day truths...Being a new mom and trying to shed my pregnant body is hard. It would be so easy to just say "weight" is what I hate about myself. But I'm going to choose something that I've had a difficult time dealing with since I was little. I also wish I could choose something that wasn't so superficial...however I'm not going to. I'm choosing something that has been with me since the day I was born.

Something I have always hated about myself is my skin color. I was also made fun of when I was little because of how pale I am. Even at a few months shy of 30 I still wrestle with my feelings. Thankfully, lately I've been more on the like side, but that could just be because I've had more important issues to deal with. I haven't met many people that are as pale as I am. I've been called every name possible...and I can still remember certain occasions from my childhood that illicit tears to this day.

So long sunshine...

I know it has been too long since my last post.

I head back to work tomorrow :( Not looking forward to missing my baby girl. I wish I could see her smile every time she wakes up.

I also had a short stint at the ER last week, so I'm still recovering from that.
August was my unclutter month. September is going to be my 30 days of Truth month. Anyone want to join? I'll try and upload the 30 topics tomorrow so you can start thinking of them yourselves!

And yes, I know it has been a long time since my last post! Busy few weeks. Camping, Katy's Graduation, School Work, out of town guests! But don't worry I've been keeping up with my August goal of uncluttering 31 items! I've also won two different items on two different blogs, so I've got a lot of catching up to do...just not sure when I'll do it :)

August is the Month to Unclutter!

So in keeping with my theme of the month: Unclutter! Here is an article I found on the blog I dream of clean.net:

Great Advice....now if I can only try and live by it!

Oh, and an update on my first week of the Unclutter challenge: I've made a pile of 12 items of clothing that I'm going to donate. So I've exceeded the 7 for this week. I'll definitely keep track, just in case there is another week where I can't find anything I want to get rid of!

Anyone out there doing the challenge with me?

Here are 10 foolproof ways to Evaluate, Eliminate, and Reduce Clutter:

  1. If it’s sentimental but not useful, take a picture, showcase it in a beautiful frame and get rid of it! You and others can actually admire it on a daily basis rather than keeping the item tucked away in a closet.
  2. Donate on a regular basis. Keep a giveaway box at all times and then find a donation center to utilize. I’ve previously mentioned 10 ways you can sell or donate items to clean out your house and simplify your life.
  3. Sell things you don’t need and make some extra cash in the process. The link above lists a few avenues for making money on those little things cluttering up your home.
  4. Don’t go shopping. Seriously. Just don’t! Easier said than done, right?! Granted, there are items that we do need (like Back to School supplies, right?!). However, the majority of purchases we make are probably unnecessary. We shop for leisure. We upgrade and get the latest and greatest gadget. We just have to buy that cute outfit because it’s a good deal!! I like shopping as much as the next person, but when I refrain, my house thanks me!
  5. Use what you have. This can be applied to so many aspects of our life (cooking, clothing, etc.) but let’s focus on home decor for the moment. Instead of buying new home decor, consider moving your furniture, knickknacks, blankets, etc. to a new location in your home. Use paint to bring new life to old furniture. Think up creative ways to re-purpose what you already have. Sometimes a new arrangement can completely transform the look of a room.
  6. Implement a trial period mentality. We are in the process of putting our home on the market and one of the greatest (and hardest) things we’ve had to do recently is pack up many of our belongings for storage. We only kept the things we use on a daily basis. It’s surprising how many things I’ve been keeping around “just in case”. I’ve come to realize that I don’t need, want, or love any of those things. If there’s something you’re hesitant about getting rid of, consider storing it in a special place for a specific time period. If you haven’t needed it by the end of that time, sell or donate it.
  7. Keep a gift list If you’re family gives gifts at birthdays, Christmas, etc. and celebrating in an alternative way is not an option, keep a list of items you’d like to have. You know you’ll be receiving a gift at some point during the year so make sure that item is useful to you. If you buy everything that you want or need, the gift giver may struggle to find something for you. There’s a high probability that you may receive something that will just clutter your life and home. Have an ongoing list for when that special someone asks you what you want.
  8. One thing in, One thing out. This advise has been given time and time again. It seems so simple, yet it can easily be overlooked “just this once!” The things is, “just this once” becomes the norm rather than the exception. You must be intentional about removing an item every time you bring something new into you home. Keep a box or bag somewhere in your home to put the old items. When the box is full, drive to the donation center or stick it in the yard sale corner of the garage. When you get a new black shirt, get rid of the old faded shirt. When your kids get a new toy, help them pick out a toy that they’ve outgrown. Be intentional.
  9. “See” your stuff through someone else’s eyes. Have a friend come over to help you see your home as they do. Ask them what stands out and doesn’t look great in your home. If it doesn’t add value, give it away or sell it.
  10. Get a new perspective. Visit a homeless shelter, spend time with someone who has been down on their luck, or even visit a third world country. When we personally invest in the life of someone who is struggling for food, water and shelter on a daily basis, our “stuff” suddenly becomes less important and much easier to eliminate.

Happy 4 Month Birthday Calais!

“A baby will make love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, bankroll smaller, home happier, clothes shabbier, the past forgotten, and the future worth living for”

1 month

2 months

3 months

4 months

4 months...122 days...2,921 hours...175,316 minutes

Can you believe it?

You can lift your head.
You smile first thing in the mornings.
You love laughing at the mirror.
You love your giraffe.
You grab things.
You camped like an old pro.
You try to put everything in your mouth.
You roll over from your tummy to your back.
When we leave you alone in your crib you like to talk to yourself.
You and CB already have an amazing bond.
You want to play with Mud but she's not so sure yet.
You have more facial expressions than mommy.
Your hair is always getting compliments from strangers.
Your first swimming experience was a success.
You learned how to pull the velcro on your diaper cover.

This is only the beginning of so many more memories. I love you Baby Girl.

Unclutter Challenge

Over at unclutterer.com they have the Thing A Day Challenge.

To sum it up, the challenge is basically de-clutter your life! Get rid of 1 thing a day for however long you feel fit.

So starting Aug. 1 I'm going to get rid of 1 thing of mine in the house a day. I'm not sure if I will grab something once a day, I'll probably grab 7 items on Sunday and put it in a box. Then at the end of the month drop it off at GoodWill.

Does anyone feel like joining me in this challenge? You don't have to list what you've gotten rid of if you don't want to!

I doubt I will be getting rid of any big items (t.v., bed, etc.) I see small items, a book here, some craft supplies, shoes.

I think this should also help me not feel like everything is in dis-array with the baby. Happier mom equals happier Calais :)

Here's to a happier, less crap filled August!

I want these :)

So you know when you are making something with your hot glue gun and you inevitably brush it against your finger, thigh, leg, foot, hand (yes I've done all of these!)?

Well I just came across these! Hot Glue Gun Helpers

Yup, I want them...nope I need them!

How much easier will crafting be now? I may have to get a set before making Christmas gifts!

The 3 C's: Camping + Class + Calais

View from the top of the Astoria Column
Can you believe I've been teaching for 3 years in Portland (for a total of 6 years!) I'm surprised I lasted this long at my current location! I'll save a blog post on my current school for another time...Since I've just finished my third year teaching, Portland Public Schools require any 3rd year teacher to take a graduate level class in order to keep your teaching license. Then after that, all you have to use are our PLU's (my credits for going to workshops, etc.)Since having Calais, I knew I couldn't actually go INTO class...so I opted for an online class. A coworker told me about the Heritage Institute. It's partnered with Antioch University in Seattle. After browsing all the classes I ended up choosing a course called Northern Oregon Coast History: A self guided tour. Basically the class itself is comprised of 1) Reading a book and writing a 5 page review. 2) Going to the coast (Astoria, Seaside, Hug Point and Tillamook) and visiting multiple sites and taking multiple pictures 3) Writing many lesson plans, questions, writing prompts, papers. So far I've completed 3 pages of my book (It's pretty boring!) I haven't done any of number three. I think having a baby has caused me to put all this on the back burner! So this past week, Joe, Calais and I set out for the coast and visited many sites, museums and markers.Family Portrait in front of The Pacific OceanHanging with DadHanging by the Fire at the CampgroundWith Dad at the BeachWoke up with a smile on her face!Amazing SceneryOn the highway driving down the coastOne of the assignments was to take a picture at the 39 signs...I acted out almost all of them!We are now putting everything in our mouths!
We ended up camping both nights we were out there. The dogs were left with my friend Sarah, so we were able to give full attention to Baby Girls FIRST camping excursion. I'm glad we are starting her so early. Joe had never camped until our Great Cross Country Road Trip at the age of 27.
The first night we stayed at Fort Stevens our first night and Cape Lookout our second night. Calais did amazing both nights! We put her down around 7:30 both nights. Her first night she slept until 7 the next morning. Her second night she woke up around 4, but went back to sleep again until 7 after a quick snack. We really are lucky that she inherited her fathers sleeping genes and not mine!Calais REALLY enjoyed the Tillamook Cheese FactoryAnother acting on my part!Grabbed this bucket for 50 cents, sadly no ice cream in it.
The scenery was absolutely amazing and it was great seeing so many historic sites! (I have even come up with product that I would like to patent and produce, but more on that...if we ever actually get around to finding what it takes to make this product!)At Fort ClatsopBaby Girls new trick...taking her Nuk Nuk out and trying to put it back in!

Pool Adventures!

First Time at the Pool...July 18, 2010

Ever since we found out we were pregnant we knew that she would be put in the water. How could she not, with two parents who both swam competitively in college. In everything that we have read, it said that you shouldn't start swim lessons until 6 months (or when they start crawling). But most boards said it doesn't hurt to get your little one adjusted to the water early.Eating the Float

So that's exactly what we did!
We were waiting for a cloudy day, just since we can't put sunscreen on her until she is 6 months as well. We bought a sweet float at Toys R Us.
Floating with her Daddy

Since we are also using cloth diapers we also knew we didn't want to get the packaged lil' swimmers. So we checked out our diaper store and found a "cloth waterproof" swim suit that is absolutely adorable!
Loving the Water

I have to say, her first experience was an absolute SUCCESS! I was much more worried than she was and I didn't even need to be!
She seemed to like the water and even tried to eat her float for a little bit (she has already started putting everything in her mouth, and if you stick your finger in there it will def. get mashed!)
Joe dunked her under once and she was definitely startled but was able to easily be reassured and calmed back down easily!
And she is a Natural!
